Four Levels of the Story King David's Crime (For BBA | BBA-BI | BBA-TT | BHM | BHCM | BCIS First Semester)

King David's Crime

Literal Comprehension:
The biblical story King David’s crime is about the King David and his immoral as well as cruel nature. David is the Israeli king. Once, he sends Joab, his military commander and his soldiers to fight against the people of Ammon and besieges Rabbah, but he stays in his palace in Jerusalem. One evening, he sees a beautiful woman taking bath in her house. Her immense beauty attracts him, so he inquires about her. She is Bathsheba, the wife of Uriah. Then he sends his men to bring her to his palace and involves in physical intercourse with her. Later, she informs him that she has conceived his baby.

David is the immoral and cruel and king, so he makes Bathsheba pregnant knowing the fact that she is the wife of Uriah, one of his soldiers who is fighting in a battlefield for the sake of his country. In order to conceal his adultery, he immediately calls Uriah from the battle so that he would go home to sleep with his wife and consider his baby as his own. Instead of going to his house, he sleeps at the door of the king’s house with all the servants. When King David asks him about the reason for not going to his house, Uriah replies that he cannot go to his house to eat, drink and lie with his wife because so many people are encamped in the open field of the battle. Then David makes a conspiracy writing a letter to Joab telling him to put Uriah, in the forefront of the horrible battle so that he may die. As his order, Joab assigns Uriah. As expected Uriah is killed in the battle. When Uriah’s wife hears the death of her husband, she is shocked and mourns for him. After some days, David brings the widow to his house and makes her his wife. After coming there, she gives birth to his son. The king using his absolute power involves in the evil deed of killing Uriah and marrying his wife. Finally, the king’s crime displeases God.

Interpretation:
The biblical story is trying to tell us that sensual desires make human beings immoral and cruel. It also says that even powerful people have their sensual desires, but they misuse their power to quench their lust and involve in heinous activities. Besides, it tells us that uncontrolled lust results in the downfall of common people’s lives as well as powerful and prestigious people’s lives.

Critical Thinking:
The religious story has a moral lesson that our immoral sensual desire brings destruction in our lives. But there are some unconvincing ideas and events in the story. So, we can raise some questions regarding them. The questions are:
- Can a king easily involve in adultery?
- Is it possible that countrymen remain silent when their guardian does any illegal things?
- Can adultery not be punished when there is the involvement of powerful people?

Assimilation:
After reading the story, I came to know that we should control our sensual desire for not involving in different heinous crimes. Besides, I realized that if we exercise our absolute power, we become immoral and cruel, and finally we face our downfall in our life.
