Marriage as Social Institution Summary (Class 12: Com. English/ With Nepali Translation)

Marriage as  Social Institution
- Stephen L. Nock
Short and Simple Summary:
The essay talks about the importance of marriage, and it presents marriage as an important social institution.

Marriage is much more than the unity of two bodies. It establishes a connection between a husband and a wife based on trust. It has many advantages for those, who take marriage as a property, and for making the property valuable there must be equal love, support and trust between a husband and a wife. It is also a relationship that is defined legally, socially and morally. So, it is taken as an institution. After marriage, modern men have to play important roles and maintain physical and mental health for involving in different situations.

On the other hand, the writer believes that marriage benefits people because it is a body of society. After marriage, husbands and wives get their chance to enjoy a harmonious and happy life. Besides, it helps them to know the purpose and meaning of their life. The writer even says that marriage is an effective way to control people’s unnecessary desires and choices.

In another context, the writer says that these days marriage has become a fashion in the name of living together. Other kinds of marriages are not even circled legally, morally and socially. According to him, normative marriage has been discarded in today’s societies, so there are mainly problems in marriage. In this context, he presents six dimensions of marriage on which he has agreement. The six dimensions are:
1. Marriage is a free personal choice and right based on love.
2. Maturity is necessary.
3. Heterosexual (opposite sex) relationship is necessary.
4. The husband is the head and the main earner.
5. Sexual fidelity (faithfulness) and monogamy (relationship with only one partner).
6. Married partners will become parents.
Nepali Translation:
