A Devoted Son

Brief and Simple Summary:
The story “A Devoted Son” written by a famous Indian writer Anita Desai is a realistic story about a middle-class Indian family in an Indian village. The story shows that all parents have dreams for their children and teaches children to love, care, protect and respect their parents.

Rakesh, the main character of the story is Varma’s son. Though his father is illiterate, he has a dream of making his son educated. As his dream, Rakesh completes medical course with the highest marks, and he is going to America for his further study. Then there is celebration in his family in the presence of his neighbours.

To complete his degree, Rakesh spends some years in America, and after his degree he gets jobs there in famous hospitals. But after some time, he comes back to his homeland, and marries an uneducated village girl. But his parents are not happy with his decision of coming back and marrying the girl. After coming, he starts working in a city hospital and later he becomes the director of the hospital. After some years, he starts his own clinic, buys a car and becomes the most famous doctor.
Rakesh is a good-natured man, devoted son, excellent doctor and responsible husband, so he is living a very happy life. But unluckily, he loses his mother. After his mother’s death, his father becomes sick and heart-broken and stops taking care of his own health. So, Rakesh starts taking care of his father. His father always wants to take sweets and oily food and refuses to take tonic and medicine. But Rakesh always takes care of health by not allowing him to take any unhealthy food items. So, this creates a kind of tension between Rakesh and his father. One day, Rakesh’s father wishes to die, so he does not take medicine and knocks the tonic bottle out of Rakesh’s hand. Then the bottle falls down on the floor, and he dies.
