The Three Students Questions-Answers (Class 12 Opt. English)

The Three Students
- Sir Arthur Canon Doyle

Questions-Answers

Q) What are the names of the three students? How are they?
The names of the three students are Gilchrist, Daulat and Miles. All these students are the possible candidates for the Fortescue Scholarship. The first student Gilchrist is a good scholar and player. He plays in the rugby and cricket team for his university. The second student Daulat is quiet and hardworking. He is well up in his works. He is a steady and methodical person. The third student is Miles. He is one of the brilliant students of his university, but he is unprincipled. Due to his bad behaviour, he was nearly expelled from his university.

Q) Why was the servant Bannister very worried about the event?
The servant Bannister was very worried about the event because he had the responsibility of looking after the examination room. But a cheater broke into the room and copied the questions, and they were tampered. On the table, there were shreds of a pencil, and a broken tip of lead was lying on the floor. As a cheater, Gilchrist had intruded into the room, who was the son of his former master. But Gilchrist had left his gloves on the chair. As a servant of his father, he wanted to protect him from being caught by the professor Hilton Soames.

Q) How did Soames know that someone had been in his study room?
Soames knew that someone had been in his study room because there were some reasons for proving this. Some of the reasons were that there were the shreds of a pencil,  there was a broken pencil lead, his papers were scattered, there was a small piece of black clay and the door was opened which had locked earlier.

Q) Why are jumping shoes important in the story?
In the story, the jumping shoes belong to Gilchrist, and the shoes have very important role because they helped to find out the culprit. In the shoes, there were small pieces of black clay with wood dust as in the professor’s room. There was same dust in the long jump pit, where Gilchrist had gone for his practice. So, the dust was attached in his shoes, and when he broke into the professor’s room, the dust had fallen there. By investigating all these things, the culprit was caught. Thus, the jumping shoes are very important in the story.

Q) Who copied the exam questions? What were the papers that were copied?
Gilchrist, one of the students of the St Luke’s college copied the questions for his scholarship examination. The papers that were copied were the lengthy passage, which was in the Greek language, and the question was going to be asked to translate in the examination.
