Karnali is completely linked economically with the lowland region to the south specially Nepalgunj beacuse Karnali is not development friendly due to its difficult geographical condition. So, the people in Karnali go to Nepalgunj to sell medicinal herbs, hashish, hand-knit sweaters, yarshagumba, silajit and blankets. After selling them, they buy cotton cloth, sweets, aluminium, iron ware, spices, jewellery, distillery, etc. Besides, most of the people go there for short-term and long-term jobs for earning their living.

During the 15 months journey of two American geographers on foot, they come to know about the life, culture, life standard and their various problems. The life of the people of Karnali is very miserable and full of struggle because of difficult geographical condition. Due to the geographical hardships and their livelihood problem, they have to depend economically on the low land regions to the south in many ways. So, the people in Karnali especially go to Nepalgunj to sell medicinal herbs, hashish, hand-knit sweaters, yarshagumba, silajit and blankets. After selling them, they buy cotton cloth, sweets, aluminium, iron ware, spices, jewellery, distillery, etc. Besides, most of the people go there for short-term and long-term jobs for earning their living. These people are innocent, laborious but superstitious. Being conservative and superstitious, they are backward in almost all fields. To join their hand and mouth, they involve in trade and rear cattle in a great number. They also cultivate land, but their hard work even does not support their survival completely. They cut down trees for various purposes like: for feeding the animals, making fire wood and selling them for some money. They believe that a bad star may have an evil influence on them. Though they have many problems, they live a simple, honest and hardworking life being friendly and united.
