Concept of Communication
The English word 'communication' has been derived from the Latin word, 'communicare' which means to impart or participate or transmit. So, the term ‘communication’ refers to the sharing of information between different individuals. It includes the sharing of ideas, concepts, imaginations, behaviours and written content. Mainly, we communicate to transmit information or meaning. In other words, communication simply means a transfer of information from one place to another. This transfer of information can be conducted in different ways and for various purposes. The transfer or exchange of the message or information can have many purposes like informing, explaining, convincing, debating, arguing, comparing, explaining and so on. Communication is an inevitable aspect of human existence because we cannot imagine human existence without communication. We communicate all the time, so it is said that even our silence could be a message. While involving in communication, mainly three key elements or features play significant role. The elements or features are: intentional, transactional and symbolic.
- Intentional- Communication is intentional because a deliberate effort is made to create response.
- Transactional- Communication is transactional because participants are all involved in the process.
- Symbolic: Communication is symbolic because words, pictures, music and other sensory stimulants are used to convey thoughts.
