Four Levels of the Story "The Great Answer" (For BBA/BBA-BI Second Semester)

The Great Answer
- Fulton Oursler

Literal Comprehension
The story “The Great Answer” written by an American playwright, editor, writer and journalist Fulton Oursler is related to the Second World War, when the people of France were oppressed and struggled to go to America as refugees.

During the Second World War, in a French village near the Spanish border, many refugees had gathered. They wanted to cross the border and sail to America. They were living in complete fear because if they were caught by the secret German police, Gestapo, they would be locked up or killed cruelly. But they couldn’t cross the border because the security guards were very brutal and didn’t permit them to cross the border. Though they requested the security guards many times, they did not accept their request. So, they lost their hope for living. Among the refugees, there were a young mother and her four years old daughter, and she was also frightened to cross the border. Suddenly, one night a stranger appeared in front of them and told them to follow him because he was sent by God to rescue their life. Then they started following him because they had no other options. While following him, they started climbing the mountain, and during the climbing three old men got tired, and they became unable to walk any more steps. Instead of helping those old men, the guide gave them the responsibility to carry the daughter of the young lady on their shoulders until they died. After walking continuously the whole night and another half of the day, they safely and successfully crossed the Spanish border. Finally, after accomplishing their mission, they celebrated their delight together.

Interpretation:
The beautiful and meaningful story is trying to tell us that for enjoying freedom, people can be ready to endure any obstacles in their life. Besides, it tells us that if people become optimistic, courageous and enthusiastic, they can accomplish their goals even enduring any obstacles. More, it states that life is full of struggle, and success comes on their hands, who are never tired of any complications.

Critical Thinking
Though the story is symbolical and meaningful, there are some unconvincing ideas and events in the story. So, we can raise some questions regarding them. The questions are:
- Is it true that do gods exist?
- How can the old men climb up the mountain carrying the child on their shoulders at night?
- If there is the power of God, then why are people not protected?

Assimilation
After reading this interesting and moral story, I came to know that life is full of complications, but those complications can be solved with our struggle, courage, optimism and untiring effort. I also realized that if we want significant advancement in our life, we should focus on solutions to be free from problems.
