THE TELL-TALE HEART. SUMMARY. CLASS 12. (WITH MOVIE) BY SHISHIR GYAWALI

Summary:

The story written by Edgar Allan Poe is a story of a crime and confession. In the story, the writer describes the crime of an unnamed narrator and his confession. The narrator here is mentally disturbed and has some neurotic problems, but he denies that he is mad. He believes that he has an extra hearing power.

The narrator lives in the same house with an old man. At the beginning, he loves the old man very much, but he does not like him later. It is because there creates fear on him by the pale blue eyes of the old man. So, to get rid of his evil look he decides to kill him. Though the old man has not insulted him, has not done any wrong to him and neither her has any greed to his property, he does not like his eyes.

When he decides to kill the old man, he goes to his room secretly every day at midnight and turns on the lamp. He does the same thing for seven nights, but the old man’s eyes are always closed. He wants to see his eyes which vex him.  He does not want to kill him until he sees his pale blue eyes. On the eighth night, the narrator enters into the old man’s room silently, turns on the lamp and sees his eyes. The sight of the pale eyes makes him very angry. He has extra hearing power, so he hears the beating of the old man’s heart. The heart beat sound makes him angrier. As the sound grows louder and quicker, the narrator becomes worried that the neighbours would hear the sound. In the exciting mood, the narrator makes the lamp light brighter and yells loudly. As the old man hears the yell, he also yells. He drags him to the floor and pulls the heavy bed over him. Finally, he kills him and smiles. He waits until the sound of heart stops. At last, the heart stops beating and he thinks the old man is dead. Then he cuts his body into pieces and hides them under the wooden planks. He leaves neither sign of blood nor any sign of trouble.

When the narrator finishes his task, it is 4 in the morning. At the same time, three police men come there. They have come there because his neighbours have complained about the screaming sound of a man came from the house. He welcomes them politely and pretends as if nothing has happened there. The officers search everywhere but find nothing wrong. He cordially asks them to sit on the chairs.  He sits there just over the plank. But suddenly he feels a kind of disturbance because he hears a noise in his ears. Now, he realizes the sound like the ticking sound of a watch covered in cotton. The sound gets louder, so he is worried. He concludes that it is the heartbeat of the old man coming from under the planks. He tries to control the situation by talking louder to the police men. He wants the officers to go, but they sit and talk. He guesses that they have no idea of the sound, but their smile makes him more suspicious. He feels completely helpless because he can’t stand the sound. Finally, being unbearable and uncontrolled, he confesses his crime showing the corpse of the old man to the officers.
