Four Levels of the Story Cabuliwallah(With Full Movie and Video)

Shishir English Notes

Literal Comprehension:
The emotional story “Cabulliwallah” written by an Indian Nobel Prize winning poet and story writer Rabindranath Tagore is about the friendship between a poor Afghan peddler and a middle class lovely little Bengali girl.

The narrator had a 5 years old daughter named Mini. She was very curious to know everything, so she always asked various questions to his father. One day, she brought a peddler to her house who always sold dry fruits around the street of her house. He was Rahamat from Afghanistan and for time he had been selling his goods in Calcutta for a long time. She brought him to her house calling him 'Cabuliwallah. But she was afraid of him because her mother had taught her that people like him would always carry children in their bags. But his father showed only dry fruits in his bag, so he didn't get frightened with him. He even gave her some dry fruits. Then the little girl and the cabuliwallah started meeting every day. Both of them became best friends. But Mini's mother was not happy with their friendship, so she told her husband to be aware of him. But unfortunately, one morning Mini saw the cabuliwallah arrested by two policemen for stabbing someone in the street. After that, many years passed and Mini forgot the man. After eight years, he was released from the jail, and he wanted to meet his little friend. Then he came to Mini's house. The time was for Min's wedding, so her house was decorated and musical. He had taken some fruits as gift to Mini. But her father did not allow him to meet his daughter. Being sad, he told the narrator that his own daughter. Parvati would look like Mini. After this, the narrator allows him to meet Mini. After seeing her in her wedding dress and grown-up, he became much surprised and also felt shy to speak with her and finally asked her if she were going to father-in-law’s house. Mini felt shy and bowed her head down because she understood the real meaning of father-in-law’s house. After this, the narrator gave him some money as gift and suggested him to go back to his home for meeting his daughter and distanced family members.

Interpretation:
The heart touching and meaningful story tries to show that difference in cultures, age, status, etc. does not stop people to establish friendship among one another. The little girl Mini is from Bengal and the cabuliwallah is from Kabul. Though there is difference in their cultures, age, maturity level and status, they do not affect them to be good friends. Besides, it also tries to tell us about our ill mentality towards peddles, and it tries to show that peddlers can be good at heart, and they have feelings of love towards others. Not only this, it shows that pureness and innocence of a child can spread immense love on anyone.

Critical Thinking:
The story is amazing, and it highlights that for real friendship no culture, age, status, maturity level, etc. can restrict anyone. Though the story is incredible, there are some unconvincing ideas and events in the story. So, we can raise some questions regarding them. The questions are:
- Why would anyone let their little girl meet some stranger daily?
- Why does such a simple man like cabuliwallah stab a man?
- Why has the writer only involved a little girl in order to highlight the essence of friendship?

Assimilation:
After reading this lovely story, I became able to change my concept regarding peddlers. Before reading this story, I thought that peddlers have ill feelings, and they have villainous nature. But now, I came to know that we do not have to judge any people by looking at their outward looks in stead of their character and real feelings.
